BudgIT is a civic organization that applies technology to intersect citizen engagement with institutional improvement to facilitate societal change. A pioneer in the field of social advocacy melded with technology, BudgIT uses an array of tech tools to simplify government budgets and matters of public spending for citizens, with the primary aim of raising the standard of transparency and accountability in government. In doing this, we partner with civil society, public institutions and the media, chiefly in the areas of fiscal analyses, civic technology and data representation.
With a focus on four core programme areas (budget access, project tracking, extractive transparency and institutional support), BudgIT’s methodology is deploying refined data mining skillsets to creatively represent data in a way that empowers citizens to use the resulting information in demanding improved service delivery and, by and large, good governance.
BudgIT functions on the premise that government budgets must work for the people. Most emblematic is our project-tracking tool (Tracka), created in 2014. In Nigeria, Tracka is functional in 25 of 36 states, allowing Nigerians to post pictures of developmental projects in their communities, while our project officers help citizens offline to communicate with their elected representatives, and demand completion of government projects in their neighbourhoods.
We are in Liberia to fully replicate all the above, helping both the government and the citizenry to achieve good governance.
